March 23rd, 2008All,
I’ve posted final grades on the grade server. For some, your grade was lower due to missing memo’s. If you have not submitted your final memos and need some points, please email them to me ASAP!

I know class is over, but I saw this article and had to post it. It talks about how government and some companies are planting hidden RFID’s in walls to track theft and their employees. Luminescent dust is also being used. Another way we could be tracked and not even realize it.
It appears that Linux, like Windows, has very many security flaws. The difference is that a certain group of people do attempt to resolve the issues through online updates, while others leave it to open source developers to solve their problems. This error was recently discovered, and could’ve produced quite a bit of problems if database managers were not careful on what updates they put on their servers running Linux.
It appears as though Dell is going to have a bit of trouble with their newly released solid state drive technology, that a certain Dr. Koonce was using on this past weekend in class. That is disappointing news, if true, because it would be great to have a hard drive that both runs faster and doe not have any trouble with hard disk drive issue caused by the platters in the current drives.
The following is an article about a protein based memory storage device that the Japanees are trying to develop. Probably won’t ever be a big deal, but you never know.

All,
Those of you at LCCC and in your second year, LCCC would like to know if you would like to be included in their graduation ceremonies. But, they want me to tell them. So, if you fit all those criteria, email me with the following:
Name, address and home phone (I don’t know why).
For all of you planning to graduate this spring, we usually have a ceremony at the OU Graduation for EM students and family. If you are interested, let me know and I’ll arrange it with the chair to reserve a nice room and see about catering. Here’s the info on OU graduation.
You can get to know about the artificial heart. Check out the cost of the unit and how much it can do. It is amazing the way it works.

I’m always trying to expand my list of AIM buddies.. And I especially find it helpful as a means of communication between classmates (I still have a lot of my undergrad collegues as buddies), especially in pressing times such as our latest weather situation. Does anyone else have AIM? If so, my screen name is “aurora733″ (without the quotes). Add me and I’ll add you back!

Yet another awesome (and FREE) tool from Google. Track statistics of any website with a customized analytics dashboard!
All, I see from my college emails that most of you haven’t completed the course evals. You should have gotten an email with this and the link for your other course(s). Please fill those out, as it helps us assess effectiveness of the courses and faculty.

I thought that this was interesting. NASCAR has created a site called TrackPass. This is basically a virtual telecast of each race. It allows the user to select their favorite driver, listen to their radio communications, and see the race from any angle. It seems interesting, but I can’t see why anyone would pay for this when they could watch the free broadcast of the race on TV. I guess the next thing will be to eliminate the cars altogether and just have the driver use video games.
This is a cool article on some upcoming tech stuff! Finally a screen that can be attach to a game cube, etc, so that kids don’t have to hog the TV anymore! You can get back to watching your episodes of Seinfeld!!!
Here is a link to a report that speaks about the trends in Software pricing worldwide, very interesting.
I am trying to get a wiki site running at Marshall and found this website that compares different engines based on selectable parameters…
I will post the Final exam, similar format to the previous. That should happen Tuesday at the latest. It will be a scan/fax back. And, plan on using no more that two hours to work it. You should study the last half of the class readings and your colleagues presentations.
I’ve made a Phorum discussion group for questions. If you would like to ask a question on a topic, create a post there and, hopefully, the presenter (or some wiseass in class) will attempt to answer it.
If your ideal workspace includes a slide, a games room, a ‘chill-out’ aquarium and plenty of free food then you had better get your CV into Google.

Battle Robots are way cool. Eventhough they are toys, great technology is developed from competitions like these. I always seem to miss the broadcasting when they take place.

There was a news segment on cable television the other day that the use of computer simulation models are allocations of physicians, out-patient surgery systems, patient tracking systems, and studying emergency rooms systems. The mentioning of “simulation” seemed releveant to textbook material.
This kind of falls in line with some of the presentations already posted. According to this article a test was conducted of several airports and it was found that over half of the wireless access networks had security issues. A good way to verify if a network is secure is to look at the http address of the site. If it has an “s” attached to the end (https) or if the address bar is gold using Firefox it is a secure site. Just a little nice to know information for travellers. Here is the article link
Ohio is taking great strides in becoming a leader in the use of wind energy. Wind energy is now one of the worlds fastest growing energy resources. The governor has taken steps toward making Ohio more energy efficient by awarding 5 million dollars in grants for the development of two (100 and 49.5 MegaWatts) wind farms http://www.greenenergyohio.org/page.cfm?pageID=1427. AMP-Ohio has also announced that they will develope additional sites.
In addition, Ohio may have the opportunity to become one of the nations leaders in wind turbines and components, due to the strong manufacturing base and skilled workforce. Currently there is a shortage or turbines, due to a record demand for wind power. You can check out these articles at http://www.odod.state.oh.us/cdd/oee/RE_wind.htm
